Back in 1998 I was working at the Managed Health Care Company and a very close friend and colleague asked me: “What is your blood group”. I replied “A positive”. “Mine also” she said. She mentioned to me she was reading a book called Eat Right For Your Type by Dr Peter J D’Adamo. “The author of the book says if you are Blood Group A you are not supposed to eat red meat” she said. I was mad as hell! All the delicious dishes I loved so much – meat balls, lamb chops, boerewors, steak, tripe, ox liver etc – flashed passed my eyes. “Don’t you ever tell me about that book again. I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to hear about it. I hope I made myself clear.” “Crystal” she said.
About seven years later I went to do medicals to have a life cover with one of the Insurance companies. I did all the tests necessary and when the results came I got a shock of my life. My total cholesterol was 6.4mmol/L. My jaw dropped. I knew I was heading in the wrong direction health wise. I had to do something, fast. If not, I was risking a stroke or a heart attack. My father died of complications of high blood pressure and diabetes. My brother suffered three strokes in four years. My sister is diabetic and losing her sight in both eyes. Here I was at the verge of suffering the same fate as my family members. I remembered what my friend said years earlier and I decided there and then to stop eating red meat. I went “cold turkey”. Weeks later I felt a change in my body. I was light. When I ascended the stairs at work I felt lighter and lighter by the day. My energy levels increased. I went for repeat fasting cholesterol three months later and it was 4.9mmo/L. I did not take any medication to bring my cholesterol down. I only stopped eating the red meat.
I went and got a copy of the book and devoured it. I knew I was going to get something valuable out of it. As I was passed 40 years of age I realized I was not losing weight no matter what I was doing. I have always been health conscious all my life and would very rarely eat junk food – white bread, chips, polony/Russian, mango atchar, fried eggs etc – because I knew they were not good for me. Little did I know that the very food I have always known to be healthy for me was actually killing me. So when I talk about food that is not healthy for me I am not talking junk food. I am talking healthy food. To me healthy foods meant:
The above are the “healthy foods” I ate until I read Eat Right For Your Type by Dr Peter J D’Adamo. Even though I went to the gym and worked as hard as I could for 1hr 3-4 times/week I was not losing weight. Instead I was bulging. I was getting bigger and bigger and getting frustrated and I was at the point of giving up. I then followed the blood type diet as stated in the book and exactly 3 weeks later I saw changes. I started losing weight. Despite my menopause and low metabolism, my weight was going down. It has been steadily dropping without me starving myself. The last time I weighed 68kg was 30 years ago when I was in my twenties. I knew it was almost impossible to lose weight at my age. But not with the blood type diet! My blood pressure also went down from borderline high blood pressure (145/95mmHg) to normal (124/76mmHg). My energy levels increased so much I even forget to take supplements. Before I started the blood type diet I would not go for more than two days without supplements because I would be tired all the time and find it difficult to get out of bed. As I saw the effect of this blood type diet on me and my other friend who is blood group O, I decided to take this information to the general public. That’s how UTMOST HEALTH AND WELLNESS was born.
ABOUT THE BUSINESS
UTMOST HEALTH AND WELLNESS was founded in 2014 by a Professional Nurse with Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery and BA (Psychology) (UNISA). She has worked in both private and public hospitals, Managed Health Care and Employee Wellness (EAP/EWP). She is passionate about health and wellness as opposed to curing disease. At UTMOST HEALTH AND WELLNESS we ask: “Why suffer from diseases if you can prevent them.”
The company is run by professional nurses and Consultants who have undergone extensive training in doing blood group testing and advising people on what to eat and what not to eat based on their blood group.
VISION:
To reduce the prevalence of obesity and lifestyle diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer, stroke and heart attack) to negligible levels one blood group test at a time.
MISSION:
To educate and empower the public about the importance of knowing their blood group and eating according to their blood group so they can take control of their health and escape the scourge of lifestyle diseases.
GOALS:
Short term - To have individuals tested for their blood group and know what to eat and what to avoid based on their blood group. Currently we operate from Mpumalanga and Gauteng. We would like to expand to other provinces.
Intermediary goals - To have teams designated in different areas in each province testing people their blood group. Every person is a potential client so we target everybody. We go to where the clients are – work place, social clubs, churches, schools etc – we take the business to where the client is.
Long term - To have the most of South African knowing their blood group and eating according to their blood group. We would like to have the scourge of lifestyle disease reduced tremendous in the near future.
According to Prof Noakes of the University of Cape Town (16th September 2015, Pretoria News), South Africa is heading for a Diabetes Tsunami.
What Does Utmost Health Offer?
1. Rapid blood group testing: the test takes 3-5min and we determine the blood group on the spot
2. We give information sheet as to what to eat and what not to eat
3. Consultation to determine eating habits and offering advise accordingly
4. Meal plan (if needed) according to blood type.
Conventionally people would go the laboratory to get their blood group tested and would then come the following day to get their results. Some laboratories would like to have the test requested by a doctor. Most clients don’t have the time to go to the doctor’s rooms then go to the laboratory to have their blood group tested especially because the blood group test is not an emergency. So the client keeps postponing until they get sick. The services we offer eliminate all that. The client doesn’t have to go anywhere. We go to where the client is. We do a finger prick, get three drops of blood and 3-5 minutes later, “voila” the blood group is determined. What can be better than that?
